Storage? What Storage Sir?!

Category: Self-storage by: kj @ 5th September, 2010

Self Storage has Become The “Storage”

It’s funny how things change! We used to have to spend a lot of time talking to our customers (and prospective customers) what self storage was just a couple of years ago…

And in those days we almost always said “self storage” because we were trying to differentiate ourselves from other forms of storage - one being the type of storage offered by removal companies - which obviously wasn’t self storage as the removal firm packed and boxed everything and then stored it while you sorted out your move.

But in terms of the internet (when machines judge the meaning of words for you), we had to be careful not to get mixed up with other types of storage to… and the list is quite an odd-ball mix…

The main one used to be data storage, especially for computer literate types.. but nw that we ordinary folk use the interent as much as them, data storage has fallen down the ranks.  The next big one was storage for cupboards and under the bed sort of storage - like plastic boxes and those funny things you keep your shoes in on the back on the wardrobe door.

The last was, believe it or not, breast milk storage.  We were surprised too!  We never thought that people would be searching for this - but as some famous US big-person (who I can’t remember) said, you don’t know what you don’t know!  But we know now and believe me there are a lot of nursing mothers who need this help!

If you want our type of storage, please give us a call or look at the Lok’nstore self storage website.  For data or breast milk storage, please try elsewhere - but be specific!

And now on the internet self storage is pretty much storage.

Lok’nStore tips for storage users

Category: Self-storage by: kc @ 20th August, 2010

So you’ve got your Lok’nStore storage unit and you’re ready to put your goods into it.  What next?

You maybe thinking ‘Rent unit. Stuff unit. Lock unit’ but there’s a few other things you can do, to get the most out of your self storage unit.  For a start try placing any items that you think you may need at the front of your storage unit, near the doors.  It may seem like a good idea just piling your goods in on your moving day, but just wait till you need that bicycle that’s right at the back of your storage unit!

If you have room, try leaving an access corridor to get to the goods at the back of your storage unit.  Should you need a box or two from the back of your unit, a small path through the middle will help.

Use any cupboards, wardrobes or draws for storage.  Put boxes on and under any tables that you put into storage at Lok’nStore.  If the legs come off your table, remove them and wrap in Lok’nStore bubblewrap for safe storage.

Stand mattresses up in a corner of the unit and always cover them with a Lok’nStore mattress cover for extra protection.  You can also stand your sofa on end for save space but speak to your local Lok’nStore storage centre for more expert advice about this.

If you are putting outdoor equipment into Lok’nStore Self Storage you must always:

Drain the fuel from any sort of motorised engines.

Disconnect the battery on lawnmowers / motorcycles.

Always use good quality storage boxes for your goods.  Wrap anything fragile in bubblewrap or tissue paper which is also available from your nearest Lok’nStore storage facility.

What size self storage unit do I need?

Category: Self-storage by: kc @ 20th July, 2010

If you’re in need of self storage space but unsure of which size unit you need, read on…

At Lok’nStore we have a variety of storage unit sizes, ranging from a small 20sqft locker (4ft x 4ft x 4ft high) up to a huge 800sqft double doored monster!

But which one is for ‘me’, you ask?  Well for instance, if you’re moving out of a 2 bedroom flat and you need storage for your items for a couple of months, the approximate size unit you’d need would be 75 – 100sqft.  This would depend on whether you have loft contents of a garden storage shed.

And if you were looking for storage for all the contents of a 3 bedroom house, you may need a 125-175sqft unit (approx).  The exact size would again depend on whether you have a storage shed, loft and garage.

A small 1 bedroom flat / bedsitter or studio flat would fit in a 25 - 50sqft storage unit (approx) with room for a few extra boxes.

Still not sure of which size storage unit ‘you’ need at Lok’nStore?  Visit our space estimator at our website or even better give your local Lok’nStore storage centre a call for expert advice for the most knowledgeable staff in the storage industry.

Call Lok’nStore on Freephone 0800 587 3322 or visit loknstore.co.uk for the location of your nearest storage centre.

Its not about how long, it’s about the storage!

Category: Self-storage, Storage World by: kc @ 19th July, 2010

Although self storage is commonly used for short term storage, it’s by no means limited to just that!

You can store your goods at Lok’nStore for as long as you want. The storage contracts are month-to-month with no long term commitment required, and no penalties or charges for removing items early (you just need to give us 7 days notice).

But the convenience of Lok’nStore self storage does lend itself to short term storage, because you can go anytime the facility is open to add items or remove them.

For people in the process of moving, self storage is perfect, because it can be so flexible, cost-efficient and short term. But there are many good reasons to consider self storage for your long term storage needs. Traditional storage might require a long term contract and therefore seem like a good long term storage solution. But if you use self storage instead, you get the flexibility of being able to come and go when you please and add and remove things when you want, while knowing your items are secure behind your own lock and can’t be accessed or moved as they can with traditional storage. Self storage can make it much more convenient to store items that you need to access regularly or just from time to time.

If you’re interested in self storage and want to know more, call Lok’nStore on Freephone 0800 587 3322 or visit www.loknstore.co.uk for more info!

Happy 2nd Birthday to the Lok’nStore storage blog!

Category: Self-storage, Storage World by: kc @ 14th July, 2010

Today the UKs favourite (and oldest?) storage blog has turned 2.

That’s right; we’ve been reporting on the world’s storage stories, features, guides on moving and storage and packaging for 2 years today.  Here’s a few of the weird and wonderful stories that we’ve featured on our storage blog since July 2008

In September 2008 we brought you these fantastic cat storage boxes in the shape of fire engines.  Who wouldn’t want to see their cat in one of these boxes?

That November we brought you the story that Sir Arthur Connan Doyle had written a short story called the “The Adventure of the Cardboard Box.”

But my favourite storage story has to be this one, the street that was rapped in bubble wrap to protect its accident prone inhabitants.

We’ll be continuing to bring you all the storage news from around the world each day on the Lok’nBlog but if you want more information or have any questions about self storage or Lok’nStore why not contact us on Twitter @LoknStore, facebook or at our website, www.loknstore.co.uk

How to choose which storage unit you need

Category: Self-storage by: kc @ 12th July, 2010

Lok’nStore storage units can be of great help in different phases of life.

You can safely keep your belongings at a secured self storage facility and have more space in your home. Some reasons for creating space in your home are remodelling, the arrival of a new family member, new furniture, and securing your valuables from theft or robbery. There are several reasons for hiring a storage facility, but what is important is the type of storage facility that you hire. Here are some tips to help you take the right decision.

How to Choose

Location: The location of a unit should be the first aspect that needs to be considered when renting a storage unit. It should be close to your home or to the office, so that you do not have to travel a long distance to fetch your belongings. A far-off storage unit can be cumbersome to reach, as you would not like to waste your time in traffic or money on fuel. It is advisable to hire a facility that is located in your vicinity.  Lok’nStore has 22 self storage centres across the south east, many near major motorways or A roads.

Size: Self storage buildings have units of different sizes.  The staff at Lok’nStore is the most knowledgeable in the storage industry and will help to pick the correct size to store your goods or belongings in.  Check the vertical space of the unit apart from the floor space. The vertical space will allow you to stack up items in boxes.  Make the best use of the space available and save money by hiring the right size of the unit.

Security: This aspect cannot be ignored as it is of prime importance. When you store belongings at a Lok’nStore Self Storage facility, they are locked securely into you unit that only ‘you’ have a key to.  When Lok’nStore storage centres are open, they are fully staffed at ‘all’ times.

Remember these simple things while you hire storage units. Another important factor is to pack your belongings properly. Packing also plays an important role in storing your belongings. Poor packing will make the moving job difficult for you.

For more details or free information on self storage and Lok’nStore call Freephone 0800 587 3322 or visit our website at www.loknstore.co.uk

Circus uses self storage when it isn’t on the road

Category: Self-storage, Storage World by: kc @ 29th June, 2010

It appears that ‘Self Storage’ is catching on all over the world…

In a self-storage space in Toa Payoh, there is a room filled with things associated with a circus.

Unicycles, plastic saucers of various colours, spinning reels (called diabolos) and balance boards (called rola-bolas) are among the many bulky props that belong to Circus Outreach.  The non-profit youth organisation conducts school workshops for “at-risk” young people who need guidance in life.

The group also performs at street and clown festivals in Singapore and overseas.  The items in self-storage once cluttered up the group’s studio and office in Tanjong Pagar.  They were moved to a ‘Self Storage Facility’ in 2006.  Said Circus Outreach founder and professional comedy juggler Knik Pang: “We used to have a studio and office in Tanjong Pagar but rental became very expensive in 2005.”

Home for the props is a 60 sq ft storage unit.

The group keeps many props at any one time, with most of them stored in the various schools where they conduct their workshops, which typically last 10 weeks each.  But the group faces a storage problem during the school holidays.  “It is during December when students are on holiday and there are no workshops being held that we have a problem keeping our props,” said Mr Pang.  “That’s when the storage space comes in really handy.” Now that the group has given up its office-cum-studio in Tanjong Pagar, where do the members rehearse their performances?  “We go to a free space at Toa Payoh Lorong 1 for our rehearsals.  We practise on Wednesdays from 8pm to midnight,” said Mr Pang.

The group would rent a studio only to make props that are too huge to be constructed in the self-storage space, such as a big backdrop for a performance.  Having an affordable storage space is important for the group as it is a non-profit organisation.  “We’ll be here a long time. The space is fantastic for our props and we are really happy to keep it this way,” said Mr Pang.  “If there is any shortcoming about renting a self-storage space for all the group’s props, it would be this: a growing collection as a result of the availability of space.”  Said Mr Pang: “When you have this space to store things, you just keep buying more.  “As we don’t keep an inventory of the items, we have lost count of what we have.”

Storage space for student records

Category: Self-storage, Storage World by: kc @ 28th June, 2010

Sounds like this is another school that needs storage!

Noble High School is running out of fireproof storage space for student records.

Principal Joseph Findlay said the school is required to keep student transcripts, medical information and SAT scores for all of the school’s students. He said many of the files, however, which stretch back to the first days of the high school’s existence in the 1960s, have a lot of non vital information, such as kindergarten screenings from 30 years ago.

Findlay said storing student records is important, which is why the school wants to maximize the space it has for the files, which must be kept in a fireproof cabinet.

There are “thousands of files,” all currently stored in 16 drawers in the guidance office, according to Findlay. He said storage space has been running out “for a little while,” although the dwindling capacity doesn’t stem from a lack of planning before the new building opened in 2001.

“I think most schools get to this point,” he said. “You reach the end of storage capacity at some point, and we have a lot of stuff that nobody ever needs. We have to make room in the cabinets to keep stuff we need to keep.”

Findlay said the excess paperwork will be culled into individual student files starting later this summer, and students can arrange a time to get these non vital elements out of their files. Findlay said the school won’t just throw out everything, and will give students time to get files they wish to keep.

He said he doesn’t know how long the sorting will take because of there are “a lot of pieces of paper.”

If you need safe, secure storage space at low cost call Lok’nStore.  We already have schools, universities and hundreds of students storing valuable paperwork and belongings with us.  Give us a call on 0800 587 3322 or visit our website at loknstore.co.uk for the location of your nearest Lok’nStore.

Beautiful loft storage, German style

Category: Self-storage, Storage World, Uncategorized by: kc @ 24th June, 2010

Gremany is into storage as well you know…

Loft Hamburg, located in a restored building in the Winterhude district of Hamburg, is a private 118 square-meter residence designed by Graft. The focal point of the high-ceilinged and otherwise white space is a large pod panelled with walnut. The pod contains the residence’s kitchen and bathroom, hides its central heating, cooling and plumbing, and even provides some cupboards bookshelves and storage space. The owner was looking to use a wide variety of materials, and the walnut pod contrasts beautifully with the soft fabrics, leather and natural stone used elsewhere in the loft.
