The Borough of Fareham lies on the Solent coastline between the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth covering an area of almost 30 square miles and has a population of 108,000 people.

Fareham’s origins go back to a small settlement that was developed before Roman times around a crossing point of the River Wallington, close to the top of the present day High Street. The Romans came to the area in about AD43 and built a large fortress at Portchester, to shelter their garrison and defend Portsmouth Harbour (its ruins can still be seen).

But best of all Fareham has a Lok’nStore Self Storage Centre at Fareham Industrial Park!  With access to the centre behind Sainsbury’s, turn right at the end of Broadcut, you’ll find all the Household & Self Storage you’ll ever need.

Units at Lok’nStore Fareham come in many sizes from a small 12sqft, big enough for a couple of suitcases or 5 archive boxes, up to 3,000sqft and lots of sizes in between.   You put your own padlock (we sell them if you forget) on your unit (room) and only you have access to the unit.  It’s totally dry, clean and private.  The Fareham Lok’nStore also provides low cost van hire, FREE trolleys for your goods and a FREE forklift service!  Lok’nStore Fareham also serves the local areas of Gosport, Whiteley, Titchfield, Stubbington, Locksheath, Hedge End, Warsash, Segensworth and Portchester.

Storage story from the “Good ole U.S of A”

Category: Storage World by: kc @ 19th October, 2008

At Loknblog we’re always on the lookout for Household & Business Self Storage stories from around the world and this one caught our eye!  Over in Howell Detroit, U.S.A. a postal worker has been charged with embezzling mail after storing it in her storage unit.  Tsk - tsk. Lok’nblog does not approve!  The following report comes from Paul Egan of The Detriot News.

Authorities found thousands of pieces of undelivered mail in a storage unit after the former postal worker who rented the unit fell behind on paying the bill, according to court documents filed in federal court. Jill Mary Hull, who worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Howell from 2005 until August of 2008, was charged with embezzling mail. Hull told investigators “she could not do the job, but she needed the job,” Douglas Mills, a special agent with the postal service’s Office of Inspector General, said in an affidavit attached to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

“Hull said she was unable to get the mail delivered on time, so she left what she could not deliver in her car and drove around with it,” the affidavit said. “She said after a couple of weeks of doing this, she realized that nobody seemed to notice that she did not deliver it.”

Hull, who told postal officials she resigned her job in August to go back to school, moved the undelivered mail to a storage unit in Fowlerville and told investigators she intended to keep paying rent on the unit “until the day I died.” However, employees of Fowlerville Mini Storage found the undelivered mail early in September when they were preparing to auction off the contents of the storage unit. Hull, who rented the unit in January 2006, had not paid the rental bill since November 2007, court documents allege. The unit contained about 1,000 first-class letters, more than 4,000 pieces of standard mail, and 236 parcels, among other undelivered items, all intended for addresses in Howell, court documents show. Embezzling mail is a five-year felony. There was no immediate word from the U.S. Attorney’s Office on when Hull would appear in court.

Lok’nStore & Blog Action Day 2008

Category: Uncategorized by: kc @ 15th October, 2008

Lok’nStore Household & Business Self Storage is supporting Blog Action Day 2008 by talking about two of our favourite charities, Hope & Aid Direct and Hope & Homes for Children.

Founded in 1999 Hope & Aid Direct are a 100% voluntary, humanitarian aid charity whose team members raise their own funds.  They obtain donations of aid and transport that leaves in convoys of lorries twice a year, and is given out directly into the hands of the people who need it the most. The donations are made by the public, churches, clubs, schools and companies.

The convoys often carry out humanitarian work whilst they are away. Hope and Aid Direct has been involved in projects such as rebuilding bombed schools, renovating orphanages,  and delivering aid for third parties who would not be as welcome in some areas.  Volunteers come from every corner of the UK and from all walks of life. Whilst in recent years most of their work has been carried out in Kosovo, they have also distributed humanitarian aid in Romania, Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia. Four of their team joined workers in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the Tsunami, one of the worst natural disasters seen by any of us. They also have an ongoing project in Nigeria.

Hope & Homes for Children is a registered charity based in Wiltshire in the U.K.  They work together with children, their families and communities across Central and Eastern Europe and Africa to ensure that children grow up in an environment where they have the opportunity to fulfil their potential. They move children out of institutions into family-based care, help keep together families at risk of breakdown – due to the pressures of poverty, disease or conflict – and work to prevent child abandonment.

Some of the volunteers are packing goods right now for their latest trip to Kosovo.  The convoy of lorries, driven by unpaid helpers and volunteers will take about 5 days to arrive in Pristina, and will need another 5 days to unpack and hand out the donated goods.

Lok’nStore has provided free storage for Hope & Homes for Children and Hope & Aid Direct over the last 2 years at our Farnborough Centre and would like to wish them every success with their work in the future.

Owen, 77, will support his son from mission control in Moscow.  Richard Garriott, a 47-year-old computer game designer, is joined on the flight by US astronaut Mike Fincke, who becomes the space station’s commander, and Russian flight engineer Yuri Lonchakov.

Cardboard boxes, the lowest priced toy!

Category: Packing & Packaging by: kc @ 9th October, 2008

At Loknblog the worlds best Household & Business Self Storage blog, we’re always on the look-out for stories from around the world about “Self Storage” or “Boxes & Bubblewrap.”

We spotted this one about the humble cardboard box which is available in many sizes from your local Lok’nStore Self Storage Centre along with bubblewrap and all the associated packaging items.

Forget the fancy toy - the box it comes in can be much more fun.

The cardboard box - whether the imagination turns it into a spaceship, a castle, or just a haven to daydream in - is enshrined in America’s National Toy Hall of Fame along with Jack-in-the-Box and Candy Land. No kidding, grown-ups.

“I think every adult has had that disillusioning experience of picking what they think is a wonderful toy for a child, and then finding the kid playing with the box,” said Christopher Bensch, chief curator of the Strong Museum. “It’s that empty box full of possibilities that the kids can sense.”

Low-tech and unpretentious it may be, but the cardboard box has fostered learning and creativity for multiple generations - a key qualifier for inclusion in the museum’s seven-year-old hall of fame. “Packaging is something that’s accessible to kids, whether that’s cans or tins or wooden crates,” Bensch said. The cardboard box “makes a point that you don’t have to spend a lot, have a certain income level or charge it on your credit card to have your kids have a great play experience.”

The museum boasts the world’s largest collection of toys and dolls.

By Ben Dobbin in Rochester, New York.

Loknblog says: Lets get kids playing with cardboard boxes again!  Their better for our kids than those other boxes that you plug into the T.V. and their better for the parents pockets!  With prices from as low as £2 for a small box at your nearest Lok’nStore Self Storage Centre you can’t entertain your kids for less!  Come on Britain, lets get kids out in the streets again with cardboard boxes on their heads!
